A historian answers: Who is a theological education really for?
Rev. Dr. Justo L. González, in his book The History of Theological Education, argues that a theological education is different from other fields in that it shapes more than just those working in the profession.
“Theological studies are not the specialty of the ordained ministry, like medical studies are the specialty of physicians, but rather the way in which the church and all its members, both jointly and individually, express our love for God, as the commandment says, with all our minds. … One should study theology, not in order to pass an examination but in order to learn how to see everything – including the life of the Church – in light of the word and action of God.”
