The benefit of clear expectations
Whether your institution has a governing board or an advisory body, its members need to clearly understand their roles and responsibilities. A statement of board member expectations that is reviewed annually offers a means of establishing parameters and eliminating assumptions which can lead to inappropriate overstepping.
Consider a three-angled framework:
- Establish responsibilities of board members.
- Outline expectations of individual board members.
- Detail commitments of the institution to the board.
Question for Consideration:
How do your board members (and the board as whole) understand the parameters of their roles?
