Building a board is a never-ending task for the board chair. You want the right people who can help and the types of voices that can add to your institution. Every year, as board members come and go, finding a mix that works and gels can be difficult. As you look at the makeup of your board, who do you need that you don’t have? How do you recruit quality board members? Where do you look? I’m glad you asked.
The In Trust Center for Theological Schools has long been a creator and curator of valuable resources for board government in theological education. Here are a few free resources to consider if you're wondering:
- Where to start: Try Dr. Rebekah Burch Basinger’s insightful piece offering five things to consider in building a board. Rebekah knows this inside and out, having studied, taught, and lived it.
- How to recruit: The late Dr. Tracy Schier, who was an expert in the field, wrote this classic piece for In Trust magazine called The Delicate Dance of Recruitment. It offers a wonderful framework for thinking about board recruiting.
- How to build a diverse board: This on-demand webinar with Dr. Derek McNeil, president of The Seattle School of Theology and Psychology, will help as he provides great insight into how schools can recruit diverse voices. His experience can help guide your thinking.
