When Guilherme Peixoto was in seminary in the 1990s, he sold his sound system to focus on his future as a Catholic priest. A decade after his ordination in 1999, he returned to music – namely, electronic dance music (EDM) – to raise money for his parish in Portugal. He saw its power for evangelization and continued with his avocation.
Peixoto now has his own record label and 2.7 million Instagram followers. His sets – which blend hypnotic EDM beats with hymns, church bells, and words of faith – have been described as “meditation in motion;” proceeds from his shows still benefit church and community projects.
