The pathways for tomorrow initiative, funded by Lilly Endowment Inc., has touched the majority of theological schools accredited by the Association of Theological Schools, providing grants and creating partnerships that have brought new innovation across the entire field.
In September, the annual Pathways gathering, which happened just after press time, was expected to bring about 600 people to Indianapolis, representing the bulk of more than 220 grant projects funded through the initiative. The initiative started in 2021, and some grants have already wrapped up. Others just started this year.
The In Trust Center for Theological Schools has been the co-coordinator of the grant, working with the Association of Theological Schools to provide support for grantees and provide news and insights to the wider field.
“We’re proud to be part of this work,” said Amy Kardash, president of the In Trust Center. “The Pathways initiative has brought new energy into the field and there has been significant learning that will help schools both now and into the future.”
The September gathering was scheduled for grantees from all phases of the initiative, and the agenda included a wide variety of topics for grantees needs, including fundraising, project management, and sustainability. More coverage of the event will be found on the In Trust Center’s website and in the winter magazine. The initiative’s coordination work is designed to provide information for schools in the wider field as well as grantees.
Since 2021, the Endowment has provided grants totaling more than $700 million through the initiative. That includes grants to 163 schools for projects to strengthen their educational and financial capacities and to 61 schools to develop large-scale collaborative efforts.
