The joy of giving

As we are in the holiday season, one of the best gifts you can give your institution is the gift of investing in yourself as a board.
We started the Governance Initiative after years of collecting data and working with boards. One of the things we found is that boards rarely budget for their own development.
That is probably because boards have an altruistic sense of investing in their institutions and the people who work there. But we have found that a well-performing board is a key indicator of an institution’s success. That is why we spend the time and resources we do to help you and your board grow through our resources, including our magazine, website, programs, webinars, conversations, podcasts, newsletters, and the Wise Stewards Initiative.
We recently created the Board Development Grants to help institutions invest in themselves. These grants provide a unique opportunity to help governing boards and advisory bodies by providing funding to help advance an institution’s strategic priorities. They provide up to $10,000 to support schools in launching board-development projects that are action-oriented, meaning the grants should result in tangible outcomes. That could include bringing in a consultant, creating or revising board policies in documents, or doing other planning work.
You can find out more about the grant, including FAQs and a video overview, here.
In the coming year, I would encourage you to find ways to grow as a board and consider applying for a grant. It’s open to members of the In Trust Center who do not currently have a Board Development Grant and are not part of the current Wise Stewards Initiative cohort.
This would be a great way to invest in your board, and as you do so, invest in your institution.
