- Right-size your expectations
Begin by understanding how the other person sees the conversation. Share your perspective and invite them to partner with you in finding a solution. - Think like a journalist
Stay curious. Approach the discussion with openness and a desire to learn, while keeping your emotions in check. - Name the emotions
Acknowledge your feelings and create a safe space for others to do the same—without assigning or assuming what someone else should feel. - Take the “and” stance
Accept that situations are rarely black and white. You can have good intentions and still cause harm. Holding both truths allows for deeper understanding and more meaningful connection. - Map contribution
Move beyond blame by exploring the broader context. Ask, “What contributed to this?” and “What really happened here?” to uncover a fuller picture.
