Conflict is a natural part of life in any community – even within our seminaries and churches. The way we navigate these moments of tension can either divide us or help us grow, strengthening our ability to live out our shared mission.

In this insightful and practical webinar, educator and facilitator Dr. Ann Garrido delves into the complexities of tense conversations to help de-escalate difficult situations and foster more constructive dialogue. She provides five practical strategies for engaging in difficult conversations with courage and grace.

  1. Right-size your expectations
Begin by understanding how the other person sees the conversation. Share your perspective and invite them to partner with you in finding a solution.
  2. Think like a journalist
Stay curious. Approach the discussion with openness and a desire to learn, while keeping your emotions in check.
  3. Name the emotions
Acknowledge your feelings and create a safe space for others to do the same—without assigning or assuming what someone else should feel.
  4. Take the “and” stance
Accept that situations are rarely black and white. You can have good intentions and still cause harm. Holding both truths allows for deeper understanding and more meaningful connection.
  5. Map contribution
Move beyond blame by exploring the broader context. Ask, “What contributed to this?” and “What really happened here?” to uncover a fuller picture.
