Trustees and technology: an uneasy combination?

survey of higher education trustees conducted in the spring of 2013 by the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges (AGB) found that only about one-third are getting board-level information about education and technology that they would rate as excellent or even good.

Even more striking, among the 2,000+ trustees who participated in the survey:

  • >70% thought that online education would be “important” or “essential” to their institution within the next five years.
  • 35% thought that their institution is moving too slowly with regard to online educational technology.
  • 19% thought their board is prepared to make decisions about the use of new educational technologies as part of the institution’s strategic or business plan.

AGB President Richard D. Legon commented on these findings in The Huffington Post. He noted, “Most college and university governing board members are between 50 and 69 years old and are not digital natives, yet these leaders are responsible, along with their presidents, for answering important questions on educational technology.”
