The Summer 2009 issue of In Trust magazine includes an article by Dorothy S. Ridings on the new Form 990 — the IRS form that many theological schools and other nonprofits file each year with their taxes. Ridings' article calls the newly redesigned form a “daunting new hurdle,” but one that gives boards and others the opportunity to understand their institution better and lead it more effectively.

Read the article, titled “The New Form 990,” here.

Colloquy, the quarterly magazine of the Association of Theological Schools, has also weighed in on the new form. The magazine's spring issue includes an article by attorney Cordelia A. Glenn Grabiak that provides highlights of the new form and offers a seven-part checklist to prepare for completing it. Read the article here (pdf; skip to page 34).

The IRS itself has also posted 11 frequently asked questions about the new form, along with answers, of course. View all 11 questions here; click on each question for its answer. Or download all 11 questions and answers here (PDF).

Form 990s for all organizations that file them are available from Guidestar (free registration required).
