We're at the halfway mark of the school year and the end of the calendar year. Your campus is probably quiet and, if not, it will be soon. For any board – and particularly any board chair – there's one thing you need at this point and you may be missing it: rest. That may not have been on your list because, as a group, leaders tend to be high-achieving, high-capacity people, and rest often is never high on the list.
Board work is vital to any organization, and it can be difficult to manage – particularly coming upon other activities and responsibilities in your life. Many of us try to squeeze our board work into an already busy schedule.
I don't need to tell you how studies and experts have recommended regular periods of rest, or that God modeled rest for us in creating the week around the sabbath, a day off. If you're like me, it's just often hard to find the time to commit to rest.
So I'm going to take my own advice this holiday season. As things are winding down, I'll take some time to recharge for the year ahead. I hope you'll join me in doing so.
