The Newsletter for Chairs of Theological School Boards
Vol. 2 No. 5

Years ago, the board of Vancouver School of Theology told its president, Richard Topping, that he ought to consider a hobby given the extensive amount of time Richard was putting into his work. Richard took the advice and went back to photography.

You'll see some of the results of his hobby in the most recent issue of In Trust magazine.  Along with his outstanding wildlife photography, you'll see an insightful essay he wrote that ties his hobby into theology. Richard, who's also on the In Trust Center board, reflects on how the perspective from the lens helps him focus on important things.

The same is true in the work of good governance. We look for board members who care about our missions but we want them to bring a perspective that helps us see better into our work so we can better reflect and react to changing times. It's important that we bring diverse views, as Proverbs 11:14 tells us, with “an abundance of counselors, there is safety.”

While different perspectives are vital, they can also cause conflict. Donna Alexander, an attorney and former board chair, is hosting a webinar at 1 p.m. ET on Thursday, Feb. 15.  She's an excellent presenter, and she'll provide a deeper dive into crisis and conflict. I highly recommend it. You can register here.

With gratitude for all you do in theological education,
Amy Kardash
President
