The center for congregations has appointed Elise Erikson Barrett as its next president. She began her new role on March 2, succeeding longtime president Tim Shapiro, who is retiring after 23 years of leadership at the center.

An experienced leader in congregational life, pastoral leadership initiatives, and philanthropic strategy, Barrett will guide the center’s work supporting congregations across Indiana.

“We are excited to welcome Elise as the center’s next president,” said Elizabeth Clay, chair of the center’s board. “Her creativity, commitment to congregations, and ability to lead a talented staff will help the Center continue to imagine new ways to support congregational leaders and communities.”

Barrett most recently directed a coordination program for Lilly Endowment Inc.’s National Initiative to Address Economic Challenges Facing Pastoral Leaders. In that role, she convened leaders from 66 church-affiliated organizations to foster collaboration and support efforts to address financial pressures faced by pastors. A former pastor, Barrett has served congregations ranging in size from 30 to more than 2,000 members in rural, suburban, and urban settings in Indiana and South Carolina. She holds a Master of Divinity from Duke Divinity School and recently completed a doctorate in American studies at Indiana University, where her research focused on congregational studies and the economic practices of faith communities.

Founded in 1997 with support from Lilly Endowment, the Center for Congregations provides resource consulting, grants, and educational programs designed to strengthen congregational leadership and ministry. The organization works with partners to support the broader ecosystem of theological education and congregational life.

Shapiro will remain with the center in an advisory capacity through mid-2026 to ensure a smooth transition.
