Have you read Rebekah Burch Basinger's article in the Summer 2013 issue of In Trust? In “Teach the Governance You Want: Orienting New Board Members About the 'Governance Triad,'” she explains how good governance can be taught — if governance leaders maximize orientation and hold one another accountable.

Basinger's article contained references to several resources. The links are below.

On page 18, Basinger referred to a 2009 study co-sponsored by the Association of Governing Boards (AGB) and the TIAA-CREF Institute. This report is “Faculty, Governing Boards and Institutional Governance” by Merrill Schwartz, Richard Skinner, and Zeddie Bowen, and it appeared in December 2009 as part of the Advancing Higher Education series from the TIAA-CREF Institute. Available here.

On page 19, Basinger includes a section called “To learn more.”

Faculty, Governing Boards and Institutional Governance” by Merrill Schwartz, Richard Skinner, and Zeddie Bowen (Advancing Higher Education series, Association of Governing Boards of Colleges and Universities and the TIAA-CREF Institute, 2009). Available here.

The Art and Politics of Academic Governance: Relations Among Boards, President, and Faculty, by Kenneth P. Mortimer and Colleen O’Brien Sathre (Rowman & Littlefield, 2007). Available here.

The Road Best Traveled: Mapping the Board’s Journey Toward Shared Governance,” by Rebekah Burch Basinger in In Trust (Spring 2012). Available here.
