The in trust center for Theological Schools offers boards a chance to receive grants for their own learning and growth.

The Center’s Governance Initiative offers the Board Development Grants to help board growth by providing a catalyst to move a governing or advisory board forward toward its strategic priorities.

Amy Kardash, the president of the In Trust Center, said that the grants were created out of the Center’s work with boards. She said that the Center had seen that funds were rarely allocated out of an institution’s budget for board education and learning and said that boards could benefit from additional money to help address specific issues.

“Part of our Governance Initiative was to really focus on ways that we could support the specific work of the board at a time when institutions and institutional leaders are grappling with an expanded number of pressures related to trends in higher education and the religious landscape but also exploring really wonderful opportunities related to new ways to sustain mission,” Kardash said.

The grants are designed to fund action-oriented work for the board itself. The grants of up to $10,000 are competitive and  are open to schools that are members of the In Trust Center. The grants can be used for action-oriented board work; plans for board processes and protocols; the creation or revision of board documents, policies, and procedures; advisory board development or creation; and board and school sustainability planning for transitions, financial models, partnerships, and engagement plans. The grants allow boards to consider strategic and creative ways to improve their work, and that could include hiring a consultant to help the board.

The application will open on February 2 and will close on March 2, 2026.
