A vision for chairpersons
A vision to challenge the chair of the board.
Is it discounting?, responsible investing
Mark Wilhelm looks at tuition-discounting goals for ELCA seminaries. Richard Ice focuses on responsible investing in light of the current market situation.
Hearing aid: helping youth listen to God
Presumably God hasn't stopped calling young people to ministry, but sometimes it's hard for them to feel secure in making that choice. Mennonite Brethren Biblical Seminary recognized the problem and stepped up to make a way for the church's next generation of leaders to hear--and heed--the call.
Page proofs: lessons from books
As William Wordsworth put it, Dreams, books, are each a world; and books, we know, Are a substantial world, both pure and good. Though some may question his statement about the pure, innate goodness of books, they are indeed a substantial world—one that can leave powerful impressions and lasting changes, as the seminary board chairs interviewed in this article point out.
The view from a different chair
Not every board chair will or should have the chance to sit in the president’s seat. For Stephen McKinley, however, it was an opportunity to unlearn some illusions he had about the job and to reflect with gratitude upon his own non-presidential gifts. His article originally appeared in somewhat different form in Lutheran Partners, a bimonthly magazine for clergy and lay ministers of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
Issues debated, leaders selected
Diversity of issues was the unifying theme among denominational conferences during the summer. Delegates were asked to bring discernment to such matters as increasing litigation, Navy chaplaincy, sexuality, the historic episcopate, church planting and pastoral candidate recruitment. Also in these pages are reports on new school heads and other news affecting theological education.
