News & Insights

For those outside of Canadian theological education, and even for some inside it, the organization of Canadian theological schools can seem complicated. Canadian higher education encompasses a wide variety of governance structures, due in part to the provincial (rather than national) oversight of education.

In the Spring 2017 issue of In Trust, Barbara Mutch, director of accreditation and institutional evaluation at the Association of Theological Schools, provides a short overview of the intricacies of Canadian school governance. She explores some of the major differences between higher education structures in Canada and the United States. To illustrate this, Mutch provides examples of the varied governance models from province to province and school to school.

The article also provides sample school organizational structures, courtesy of some of the Canadian schools mentioned in the article.

If you find the structures of Canadian theological schools confusing, or would just like to learn more about the topic, you can read Mutch’s full article, “A primer on governance in Canadian theological schools.”
