Thomas Petri, Dominican House of Studies

DOMINICAN FATHER THOMAS PETRI HAS been named acting president of the Pontifical Faculty of the Immaculate Conception at the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, D.C. He succeeded Dominican Father John Langlois, president for the past seven years, who departed after being named prior of St. Gertrude’s Priory in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Petri has been vice president and dean of the Pontifical Faculty for seven years. Previously he was an assistant professor of theology at Providence College in Rhode Island. He is currently a cohost of “The Church Alive” on EWTN radio and a Papal Missionary of Mercy.

Petri is a graduate of Pontifical College Josephinum, University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary, Pontifical Faculty of the Immaculate Conception, and Catholic University of America. He joined the Order of Preachers (the Dominicans) in 2004 and was ordained a priest in 2009.

The next president of the Pontifical Faculty of the Immaculate Conception will be appointed by the Vatican upon the recommendation of the institution’s chancellor, who is also the master (i.e., international leader) of the Order of Preachers.


Melanie Johnson-DeBaufre, Drew University Theological School

THE REV. DR. MELANIE JOHNSON-DEBAUFRE has been named acting dean of Drew University Theological School, effective September 2020. She succeeded the Rev. Dr. Javier Viera, who, after serving as dean of the theological school since 2014, will be the new president of Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary starting in January 2021.

Johnson-DeBaufre has been a member of the Drew faculty since 2005 and has served as associate dean of academic affairs, associate dean of the theological school, and associate dean of graduate studies. She also serves as professor of New Testament and early Christianity. Before moving to Drew, she was assistant professor in the department of religion and philosophy at Luther College.

An ordained American Baptist minister, Johnson-DeBaufre is a graduate of Eastern College and Harvard Divinity School.


Joseph G. Mueller, Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University

JESUIT FATHER JOSEPH G. MUELLER HAS been named dean of the Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University, effective July 1, 2020. He succeeded Jesuit Father Kevin F. O’Brien, who was dean of the School of Theology from 2016 until he was named president of Santa Clara University in 2019.

At the time of his appointment, Mueller had been rector of the Jesuit Community at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for three years. A member of Marquette’s faculty for more than 20 years, Mueller served as associate dean for academic affairs in the College of Arts and Sciences and director of graduate studies and assistant chair in the Department of Theology. He was a member of the Faith and Order Commission of the National Council of Churches for seven years.

Mueller is a graduate of Marquette University, the Centre Sèvres in Paris, Weston School of Theology, and Loyola University of Chicago. He joined the Detroit Province of the Society of Jesus in 1982 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1993.

Jesuit School of Theology is a graduate division of Santa Clara University. Located in Berkeley, California, it is a constituent member of the Graduate Theological Union.


Silas L. McCormick, Lincoln Christian University

The board of trustees of Lincoln Christian University has named Dr. Silas L. McCormick as the school’s eighth president. He succeeded Dr. Don Green, president since 2014, who has been named president emeritus and professor of leadership studies.

McCormick’s appointment took effect on June 1, 2020. At that time, he had been serving as the university’s executive vice president since 2018. Previously he was the university’s vice president of enrollment and marking. He also twice served as chief academic officer.

An ordained minister and licensed attorney, McCormick is a graduate of Lincoln Christian University, University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign, and Moritz College of Law at Ohio State University. He and his wife, Anna, have two children.

Lincoln Christian University, in Lincoln, Illinois, is an independent university associated with the Christian Churches and Churches of Christ. It includes an embedded theological school, Lincoln Christian Seminary.


Craig D. Atwood, Moravian Theological Seminary

THE REV. DR. CRAIG D. ATWOOD HAS BEEN named interim dean of Moravian Theological Seminary, a division of Moravian College, in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, beginning in May 2020. He succeeded the Rev. Dr. Frank Crouch, dean of the seminary since 2001, who was granted a one-year research leave in 2020 and will retire in 2021.

Since 2010 Atwood has been a professor of Moravian theology and ministry at Moravian Seminary and has also directed its Center for Moravian Studies. Previously he was director of admissions and student life and adjunct professor of Moravian studies at Wake Forest University School of Divinity. He has also been a member of the faculty at Salem Academy and College in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Atwood is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Moravian Theological Seminary, and Princeton Theological Seminary.


James Massa, Saint Joseph’s Seminary

CARDINAL TIMOTHY DOLAN, ARCHBISHOP of New York, has announced the appointment of Bishop James Massa as rector of Saint Joseph’s Seminary in Yonkers, New York, effective July 16, 2020. Bishop Massa is the 22nd rector of Saint Joseph’s Seminary and one of five bishops who has served in this role. He succeeded Monsignor Peter I. Vaccari, who was rector from 2011 until 2019 when he was named head of the Catholic Near East Welfare Association.

From 2012 to 2015, Massa was a member of Saint Joseph’s faculty. Ordained an auxiliary bishop for the Diocese of Brooklyn in 2015, Bishop Massa has been the moderator of the curia for the diocese, the vicar for Catholic education, and the vicar for evangelization. He was executive director of the Secretariat for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs at the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops in Washington, D.C., and coordinated the consolidation of Saint Joseph’s Seminary with the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception in 2011.

A graduate of Boston College, Yale Divinity School, and Fordham University, Massa was ordained a priest in the Diocese of Brooklyn in 1986.


John McLaughlin, University of St. Michael’s College Faculty of Theology

THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNIVERSITY OF ST. Michael’s College, an affiliated institution within the University of Toronto, has named Dr. John McLaughlin to a two-year term as interim dean of the Faculty of Theology, effective July 1, 2020. He succeeded Dr. James Ginther, who completed a five-year term as dean on June 30, 2020. After a 12-month research leave, Ginther will return to the faculty to teach and to conduct research.

In 2002, after teaching for seven years at Wheeling Jesuit University in Wheeling, West Virginia, McLaughlin joined the faculty at St. Michael’s. For seven years he served as director of the advanced degree programs and for one year, he served as interim dean for the Faculty of Theology.

A scholar of the Hebrew Bible, McLaughlin is a graduate of St. Thomas University in Fredericton, New Brunswick, and of the University of St. Michael’s College.


Kristin Johnston Largen, Wartburg Theological Seminary

THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF WARTBURG Theological Seminary has named the Rev. Dr. Kristin Johnston Largen as the seminary’s next president, beginning February 1, 2021. She succeeds Dr. Kristine Stache, the seminary’s vice president for administration, who has been serving as interim president since the departure of Wartburg’s previous president, the Rev. Louise Johnson, on December 31, 2019.

Largen is currently a professor of systematic theology at United Lutheran Seminary. She also serves part-time as associate dean of religious and spiritual life and college chaplain at Gettysburg College, a liberal arts school not affiliated with the seminary.

In 2006, Largen joined the faculty of one of United’s predecessor institutions, Gettysburg Seminary, and was promoted through the ranks while also serving terms as dean and co-dean of the seminary.

Largen is a graduate of Colorado College, Wartburg Theological Seminary, and the Graduate Theological Union. Largen is married to the Rev. John Largen, who is also a Lutheran pastor.
