Today the Board of In Trust (Association of Boards in Theological Education) announces the launch of a significant exploratory initiative intended to enhance and augment the range of services it currently offers to theological schools and to other communities of theological education and ministerial formation. This initiative, taken with the support of Lilly Endowment, is part of In Trust’s ongoing effort to investigate new avenues of service to these institutions as they address their own needs and opportunities.

In the coming months, In Trust will engage with constituents and leaders in the field to develop options for reformulating its own work in order to help theological seminaries and other schools equipping persons for church vocations find and use a wider range of resources and resource providers for building their own capacity to thrive in their missions. In Trust will explore becoming a larger, interactive hub to share information, to provide direct connections to networks of collaborative learning, and to disseminate resources of value for the tasks of providing ministerial preparation. Our purpose will be to encourage institutions to develop their own creative responses to challenges and to
assist them as they discover and pursue promising new paths to greater effectiveness.

In this new initiative, In Trust remains committed to offering its services in a collaborative and complementary manner with other organizations offering assistance and support to theological education institutions, including, among others, The Association of Theological Schools, the Wabash Center for Teaching and Learning, and the Auburn Center for the Study of Theological Education.

Dr. G. Douglass Lewis has accepted appointment as the Executive Director of this exploratory initiative. Lewis formerly served as president of Wesley Theological Seminary, as chair of the In Trust Board, and as a member of the ATS Executive Committee. Until this exploratory process develops further, In Trust Board chair Dr. George K. Brushaber has announced the temporary suspension of the search for a replacement for retiring President Dr. Christa R. Klein, whose effective leadership has been instrumental in preparing and strengthening In Trust for expanded service in its mission.
